I hear CBC is airing the season 2 finale tonight. Does that mean season 2 only has eight episodes? Or am I missing something?

If you've read my previous post in this comm, you'll know that I was less than impressed with the season 2 premiere. I decided to give the show the benefit of the doubt for the next two or three episodes, which I think was a good thing. I actually quite liked episode 2x03, and I felt that they were getting closer to what made season 1 the show we all loved.

Slight spoilers for 2x04 following.Collapse )

Darn. I was really determined to like season 2 and approached it with an open mind, but I can't say I ended up liking the season premiere much (despite a great Sebastian Pigott in a guest role, I might add).

More thoughts on the Season 2 premiereCollapse )

Some of you will have heard this already, but some of you might not. Stefanie von Pfetten was not asked to come back as Daniella Ridley for season two, a choice that seemed puzzling at the time as fan reactions about Daniella had been quite positive. I personally liked her very much, and I thought Daniella and Aidan had great chemistry.

Today CBC announced two things: Brooke Nevin has been cast as Dr. Clara Malone for season two as the new female lead, and Cracked gets a new showrunner as well, by the name of Bruce Smith.

And now this whole thing makes a certain kind of sense. Obviously something was going on behind the scenes there that we're not (and probably will never be) privy to. I'm sure it's all connected. Apparently someone--be it someone at CBC or someone in the creative team--felt that the show had to undergo changes to stay successful or be more successful. And Stefanie von Pfetten's rather ungraceful departure sounds like collateral damage of the workings of showbiz.

As for my personal view... I like Brooke Nevin. A lot. First time I've seen her was in a sweet, funny, and very under-the-radar horror comedy called Infestation, where she starred alongside one of my favourite young actors, Chris Marquette. I was also happy to see her cast in Breakout Kings, and in a small role in Chicago Fire just recently.

While there's that slightly bitter aftertaste of Stefanie von Pfetten's unwilling removal from the cast list, and Brooke Nevin's rather crude replacing her, I'm determined to keep an open mind and give Dr. Clara Malone the benefit of the doubt. I really hope the new showrunner doesn't mess with a good thing!

EDIT: Stefanie von Pfetten tweeted this yesterday: "I was dissapointed the lead actor felt he could not work with myself and Tracey Forbes our co-creator. I will miss the cast and crew. It was my dream job and I would've loved to fulfill my contract." Hm, sounds like there was some major friction behind the scenes. Such a shame, and I hope things work out better for the coming season.

PS: Can you add these new tags: actor: brooke nevin, character: clara malone?

CBC just announced on Twitter (and here) that the show was renewed for a second season!! \o/

I'm so stoked! And I really need a Cracked icon.

UPDATE: Stefanie J. mentioned that it looks like Stefanie von Pfetten won't be in season 2. :-(

I am SO sorry I didn't post this yesterday. I had a family emergency and spent the better part of the day in the ER. Everybody is fine now, but we didn't get home until very, very late.

As usual, feel free to discuss the episode in the comments. Those who have not yet seen the ep, be aware that comment threads will contain spoilers.
